DESTINATIONS - TRIP TO

Bahamas

The Bahamas are what many dream of when they think of a tropical vacation. The Caribbean archipelago is blessed with clear, aquamarine water, world-class white-sand beaches, mild climate, and an amazing island vibe. There’s so much to do on this chain of 700 islands, from gorging on delicious cuisine to immersing oneself in nature to finding a new favourite water sport. Whether it’s for a family vacation, a friend trip or a romantic getaway, a yacht charter in the Bahamas will soothe the soul and create lasting memories.

DAY 1
NASSAU AND HIGHBORNE CAY
Since the capital of the Bahamas, Nassau, was once a pirate hideout, why not start your trip in buccaneer spirit at the Pirate Museum? After getting a fascinating history lesson, head into modern-day Nassau, an intoxicating blend of island charm and modern metropolitan city. Do some shopping on Bay Street and try a slice of rum cake, a Bahamian specialty. The real draw for any Caribbean trip is the beach and Nassau does not disappoint. Cabbage Beach, the most popular beach on the island, is 2 miles (3 kilometres) of turquoise water and immaculate white sand- one of the world’s most beautiful tropical paradises.

DAY 2
NORMAN’S CAY
Enjoy a long lie-in while breakfast is prepared for you on deck and the yacht approaches Norman’s Cay. This pretty and petite island has a serene, restful feel so you might be surprised to learn of its storied past as a smuggler’s cove. Nowadays, the off-the-beaten path destination has been cleaned of its unsavoury elements with the exception of one unique site: the wrecked and sunken plane that once belonged to a drug lord. Set in clear, shallow waters it is a fascinating place to do some snorkelling. MacDuff’s Restaurant serves up inventive cocktails and daily specials.

DAY 3
WARDERICK WELLS
Warderick Wells is the gateway to Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park — the first park of its kind in the world. Somewhat difficult to access if not traveling by private boat, Warderick Wells is designed for nature lovers. A striking 52-foot (15.85 metre) skeleton of a sperm whale has been left on display since 1995. Mangrove communities abound and coral reefs flourish in this protected environment. Well-marked hiking trails take adventurers further into this beautiful landscape. A unique geological feature of this island is the presence of blow holes.

DAY 4
STANIEL CAY
At the midway point of your trip, you will be transported to Staniel Cay for some incredibly memorable moments. The sapphire water and idyllic atmosphere is enough of a reason to visit Staniel Cay but for a once-in-a-lifetime experience you’re going to want to head to Pig Beach to swim with the Bahama’s famous swimming pigs. No one is quite sure the exact history of these surprising inhabitants but everyone who swims with the pigs agrees it is a highlight of a Bahamas trip. At sundown, head to Kermit’s Hilltop Restaurant and Tavern for jaw-dropping views, live music and dancing.

DAY 5
STANIEL CAY YACHT CLUB
Staniel Cay’s Yacht Club is the place to be in the Exumas, offering recreational options for every interest, age and skill level. Paddleboarding, bonefishing tournaments and kayaking and plenty more are all possibilities. For the thrill-seekers, you can even swim with nurse sharks at Compass Cay. After partaking in some organised experiences, why not rent a golf cart or a bicycle and explore the island at your own pace? Just be sure to make it back on-time for a four-course meal and bottle of wine in the Yacht Club’s excellent dining room.

DAY 6
ELEUTHERA
The remote island Eleuthera is home to 150 pristine beaches and is blissfully calm and quiet. Taking it easy is a way of life here. A breathtaking must-see destination is the Glass Window Bridge, a narrow strip that divides the deep-blue water of the Atlantic and the crystalline shade of the Caribbean. Sprinkled through Eleuthera are friendly fishing villages with charming shops and lovely architecture. Off-shore are fascinating wrecks for the intrepid voyager to explore. Cool off with a piña colada from Eleuthera’s locally grown pineapples and if you’re there on a Friday, don’t miss the Fish Fry at Anchor Bay.

DAY 7
SOUTHERN ABACO
A boater’s paradise, Abaco is the second largest island of the Bahamas, so for your last day, stick to the southern part. Seek out the elusive Abaco parrot at Abaco National Park, which was established to protect this bird as it’s the only place in the world this species of parrot exists. Hike through the park on rugged trails to an old lighthouse and breathe in the salty sea air. Later, take part in the strong maritime culture of the island by swapping stories with local boaters and yachters while drinking one last rum punch as the sun sets over the sea… and over your unforgettable Bahamian yachting voyage.
