DESTINATIONS - TRIP TO

Cuba

Step off the yacht and step back in time when you disembark in Cuba. Long isolated from the rest of the world, Cuba made its own style of fun in the form of raucous dancing, expressive music and plenty of rum cocktails. Today, Cuba has one foot in the past with colourful colonial architecture, vintage cars and fascinating history, and one foot looking to the future. Counting 3,000 kilometres (1,864 miles) of coastline and warm seawater all year long, Cuba is perfectly situated for an unforgettable yachting voyage.

DAY 1
VARADERO
Start off a Cuban sailing trip in Varadero to enjoy exclusive world-class beaches lining the warm Caribbean waters. With more than 20 kilometres (12 miles) of white sandy beach, you are spoiled for choice, although a first stop at Playa de Varadero, the #2 rated beach in the world, is highly recommended. For a pleasant outing, try the Varadero Golf Club, the first and only 18-hole course in Cuba. Or dive deep into the destination — literally — by exploring the Bellamar Caves, the island nation’s oldest tourist attraction.

DAY 2
LA CABANA, HAVANA
It’s time to head into the epicentre of Cuban history at Havana’s La Cabana. Built in the 18th century, this fort complex is one of the biggest in the Americas, having been used by both Che Guevara and Fidel Castro. Kids and history buffs will be enraptured by the nightly historical reconstruction where soldiers dressed in 18th century uniform close the city for the night with ceremonial cannon fire over Havana Bay. Balance out the history lesson with a tour of local art galleries.

DAY 3
OLD HAVANA AND TROPICANA
Settle into the Cuban way of life in the vibrant capital city of Havana. Start off by exploring the city’s colonial past in a guided tour through the four plazas of Old Havana, a UNESCO world heritage site. Next, follow in the footsteps of the famous author (and famous drinker) Ernest Hemingway who called Cuba home for thirty years by imbibing at the legendary restaurant La Bodequita del Medio, rumoured to have invented the mojito. Cap off the night with true Cuban flair at the Tropicana, an open-air cabaret, and be invigorated by the music and merriment of Havana.

DAY 4
FUSTERLANDIA
Spend this day exploring the unique hidden gem of Fusterlandia. Officially called Jaimanitas, the town is lovingly nicknamed in tribute to artist Jose Fuster who has transformed his neighbourhood into a work of art. Called both the Dr. Suess of Cuba and the Picasso of Cuba, Fuster’s childlike and bright art dominates this seaside village with over 80 murals and community paintings. Fuster is still living and working in the neighbourhood so there is even a chance to meet the visionary.

DAY 5
VINALES
Time to get exploring the natural side of Cuba. Heading south from Bahia Santa Lucia lies the Valle de Viñales. An off-the-beaten-path destination rewards intrepid explorers with stunning landscapes and natural wonders, from lush tobacco fields to awe-inspiring rock formations. The national park provides a perfect backdrop for a variety of active pursuits like horse riding, hiking and climbing. A short boat trip can take you to a massive cave system to explore even further. Not in the mood for adventure? Take a tour of a cigar plantation or a coffee farm instead.

DAY 6
MARIA LA GORDA
Day 6 of yachting around the Caribbean brings you to a nearly untouched part of the country. Maria la Gorda is a diving resort on the southwest coast of Cuba. The warm water is crystal-clear, and, as part of a UNESCO biosphere reserve, the diversity of aquatic species is unparalleled. With very few human inhabitants, Maria la Gorda remains a rare and pristine environment where coral reefs thrive. Even non-diving nature lovers will enjoy this special place, with well over a hundred species of birds calling this area home.

DAY 7
LA ISLA DE LA JUVENTUD
Sixty miles (97 kilometres) from mainland Cuba, the remote Isla de la Juventud is easily accessible by yacht and ensures privacy and tranquillity for your last day in Cuba. Once upon a time, this pine-covered island was a pirate hideout thanks to its many coves and caves. Today, the pirates are gone but plenty of biodiversity still thrives in the swamps with thrilling species to be observed. It’s a place to slow down and take your time, appreciating the wonder of nature from a white sand beach.
