DESTINATIONS - TRIP TO

Maltese Islands

Lying almost directly in the centre of the Mediterranean Sea, the Maltese Islands are a popular year-round destination for yachting. One of the world’s smallest archipelagos, the Maltese Islands are made up of three inhabited islands. Don’t let the size fool you, though. The Maltese Islands have plenty to offer travellers thanks to its prime Mediterranean location, unique melting pot culture, and 300 days of sunshine per year. With so much to see and do, it’s a playground of sun and sea for all ages.

DAY 1
MALTA
Any Maltese Islands voyage should begin on its namesake island. Today Malta is still an under-the-radar destination, but ready to explode in popularity. History aficionados will have plenty to explore around this UNESCO World Heritage site which has been populated for over 8,000 years. The fact that Malta gained independence from Great Britain in 1964 plus its unique position in between Italy and North Africa make for a fascinating blend of cultures. The island has a dramatic natural setting that film buffs will recognize and enjoy snapping photos at the real-life backdrops of Game of Thrones, Troy and Gladiator.

DAY 2
VALLETTA EXPERIENCES
Valletta, the pocket-sized capital of Malta, doesn’t have any inferiority complex, after winning the European Capital of Culture in 2018. Dating back to 1565, the ancient, fortified city is today celebrated for having over 320 monuments in its tiny area. One of the best things to do on this day is simply get lost in this walkable and well-preserved capital city. Being set high up on the hills provides stunning viewpoints over the turquoise Mediterranean. The blue sea contrasted with golden Baroque architecture makes Valletta extremely picturesque. Be sure to visit Strait Street for vibrant nightlife and a multicultural vibe.

DAY 3
NOBILITY TO FARMERS
Immerse yourself in the lives and histories of the Maltese people on this day of discovery in Medina, the former capital of Malta. Medina is often seen with alternate spellings, or even by its nickname the ‘Silent City’. Silent doesn’t mean empty, though, as more and more people are discovering the delights of this medieval city. It’s rapidly becoming a hot destination, beloved for its architecture and views as it is situated on one of the highest peaks on the islands. It’s no wonder that it has been featured in so many films and TV series.

Tour the 15,000 vines planted upon terraced land and appreciate the botanical diversity of this small island with fig, carob and olive trees all growing on the estate. Enjoy an intimate and exclusive wine tasting with passionate winemakers, available by appointment only as it is not normally open to the public. Nearby, the picturesque fishing port Marsaxlokk is worth a visit to see the traditional Maltese boats called “Luzzu.” These colourful boats are unique for the eyes painted on the front for luck and protection.

COMINO ISLAND
On this day, you’ll voyage away from Malta and towards petite Comino with its 3.5 square kilometres (1.35 square miles) and a permanent population of only two residents. You’ll be tempted to take a dip in some of the clearest water in the Mediterranean along the way. The most famous attraction on Comino is the Blue Lagoon whose geographical location creates a picture-perfect oasis thanks to crystal-clear water reflecting blue sky in a breathtaking display of beauty. The opportunity to dive, snorkel and windsurf are plentiful on Comino but if you want a bit more peace and quiet, head to pretty Crystal Lagoon a bit further south.

GOZO ISLAND
Compared to Malta, Gozo Island feels like a rural escape. It’s a peaceful and quiet island for a laid-back and relaxing day. Stroll through the green countryside and take in the gorgeous surroundings and craggy coastline. The salt pans at Xwejni Bay from Gozo’s salt mining industry are a fascinating sight and make for interesting pictures, especially at sunset. Gozo Island offers plenty of local delicacies to quench your thirst, including a craft beer brewery and a family-owned winery.

SCUBA DIVING OF GOZO ISLAND
You can’t go wrong scuba diving at any of the three Maltese islands. The clear water, sharp cliffs, and abundance of reefs make the Maltese archipelago world-renowned for Mediterranean diving. Each island offers unique experiences, though the Blue Hole in Gozo is considered one of the best spots in Europe to dive. The visibility is excellent, the water is warm, and the natural arches and caves are endlessly interesting. If wrecks are your passion, Cirkewwa in Malta is home to interesting ruins that have turned into fascinating habitats for a diverse array of species. There are dives for every ability level.
